Celebrate Sturgeon Fest with Riveredge!

Join Riveredge Nature Center on Sept. 27th at Lakeshore State Park, downtown Milwaukee, to celebrate the ‘Return of the Sturgeon’ Project at the free, family festival – Sturgeon Fest!

The festival includes:

  • Hands on activities for kids of all ages
  • Adult educational stations
  • Scavenger hunt
  • Bouncy house obstacle course for the kids
  • Information booths from many of local environmental organizations
  • Local food carts
  • And, of course, the baby sturgeon release!  A suggested donation to the “Return the Sturgeon” restoration project allows you to release a baby sturgeon into Lake Michigan.
  • In addition to hand releasing a sturgeon, sponsors receive a certificate, magnet, and an opportunity to register one of the sturgeon – all the sturgeon are tagged (similar to how pets are micro chipped).  If a sturgeon is every captured with your tag number, you’ll be notified!
  • This is a family event with children and adult activities, educational displays, and much more!  Food will be available for purchase throughout the event.

Sep 27   NO SINNER with special guest, The Alex Wilson Band
The Center will be transformed with the sale of standing room only tickets, in addition to traditional seating, when raucous blues/rock band, NO SINNER, from Vancouver, Canada stops in Cedarburg on their North American tour, aptly named 'Save Your Soul' while promoting their national debut album entitled 'Boo Hoo Hoo'.    Think of the soul of Joss Stone and Etta James, and Beth Hurt's growling blues rock raunch, with retro power Vintage Trouble and the rasping rockabilly of Imelda May. Add to the mix, Alabama Shakes, and stir. -Blues & Soul   No Sinner, led by 26-year-old Colleen Rennison is a force of nature, a post-modern soul belter and queen of rock. A hard-singing, hard-loving, hard-drinking, hard-working throwback to those she and the guys grew up listening to, including Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Rolling Stones and Bessie Smith. Special guest, ALEX WILSON, was born into a family of talented musicians. He picked up the guitar at the age of five and never put it down. Alex formed his own garage band at 13, was playing professionally by 17 and by 21 had joined Milwaukee's Blue Rubies and was performing regionally. Playing up to 25 gigs a month, Wilson honed and sharpened his skills as a singer/songwriter, guitar player and overall entertainer.  Alex was nominated by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) for the categories of 'Blues Artist of the Year', 'Guitarist of the Year' and 'Album of the Year' between 2007 and 2011, and has won the awards in 2007, '08, '09 and '11.   In 2010 he was the recipient of the People's Choice Award. And in 2011 and 2013 Alex was chosen to represent his local blues society in the International Blues Challenge at The Orpheum Theater in Memphis, finishing in the top 10 out of 150 bands from all over the world.

Oct 17   I'm Not a Pilot at the CCC
With their blend of rock and classical music, I'M NOT A PILOT appeals to an impressively diverse fan base of both young and old. Perhaps that is what happens when a band does a mash-up of a Radiohead hit single and Johann Sebastian Bach's 'Prelude to Solo Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major as they do on their cover of 'Creep.' The band features Mark Glatzel (vocals and piano), Peter Thomas, cellist for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (electric cello), Steve Vorass, (drums), and Adrian Esguerra (bass guitar and vocal back-up). This is perhaps how it would sound if you split your chest open and let your feelings ooze out in a river of hot molten lava. The bold and mellow waxing of the cello gives the sound a richness unlike most rock bands. - Milwaukee Magazine Milwaukee indie rock band I'm Not a Pilot takes its name from front man Mark Glatzel's musing on the idea of the control - or lack of it - one has over life. Mark often alludes to being a passenger on a plane knowing the destination of his journey, though uncertain of what the route will bring him through. Best Rock Band 2010 and 2011 - Milwaukee's Shepherd Express. Best Rock Band 2010 at WYMS 88.9fm Radio Milwaukee's Independent Music Awards. Cellist Peter Thomas - Wisconsin Area Music Awards 2012 Best String Player Award for his contribution to Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs Oscar-Winning documentary, Undefeated. www.imnotapilot.com

Oct 18   Fall Night Hike

Enjoy a fun-filled and adventurous evening packed with seasonal activities. The event starts at 5:30 but you can come for all or part of the fun.

5:30 – 6:30pm Scarecrow building contest

Feeling creative? Each family will enjoy building a scarecrow, using your own materials or some of ours (grab bag style). Scarecrows will be judged at 6:30pm in five categories: most creative, most colorful, best theme, most eco-friendly and the best scare crow built entirely with materials from the grab bag we provide.

6:30 – 7:00pm Carving out good times with pumpkins

Each family will receive one pumpkin to make into a jack-0-lantern that will light our way back from the night hike. You enjoy the fun and Riveredge does the clean-up. Extra pumpkins will be available for purchase.

7:00 – 8:30pm Night hike, star gazing and campfire

As light fades into the darkness, feel how your senses come alive.  Explore the nocturnal world of the prairie and forest, to see who is prowling around in the night. Whose eyes are those shining back at us? Will the owls answer our calls? During the hike, we’ll use powerful telescopes from the Northern Lights Science Foundation to view planets, stars, galaxies, nebulas, and maybe even catch a satellite or shooting star. Complete your evening of fun and adventure by roasting marshmallows around a campfire and listening to Native American legends about how the night sky came to be.

Our adventure is rain or moon shine, so dress for the weather.

Fee: Adult $10, 10 & under $5; Members: Adult $5, 10 & under $4. Pre-registration is required to ensure availability of scarecrow supports and pumpkins. Register online at riveredgenaturecenter.org.
